CHOREOGRAPHY COMPETITION RULES
ELIGIBILITY AND GENERAL REQUIREMENTS
The choreography competition welcomes choreographers of all backgrounds and experience levels. Eligibility is not affected by professional standing, teaching experience, previous competition participation, or past results.
Choreography may have been created at any time. There is no restriction based on the dance’s original release or publication date.
At least one choreographer listed on the entry must attend the event and perform the submitted dance. If injury, illness, or another circumstance prevents the choreographer from performing, a substitute may be used only with prior approval from the Event Director. Unless the Event Director grants an additional exception, the choreographer must still be present in the ballroom during the entry.
Participation in the competition constitutes agreement to follow all rules, guidelines, deadlines, and event procedures contained in this document.
COMPETITION DIVISIONS
Entries may be submitted in the following divisions:
Beginner / Improver
Intermediate
Intermediate Phrased
Advanced
Advanced Phrased
Choreographers who are uncertain whether an entry belongs in the Intermediate Phrased or Advanced Phrased division should contact the Event Director for guidance before submitting the dance.
ENTRY REQUIREMENTS
Each competitor may submit up to three (3) dances in each division unless the event announces a different limit.
All entry fees and dance scripts must be received by the deadline established by the event.
The overall content and difficulty of the choreography must be suitable for the division in which it is entered.
Competition music will be supplied by the event. Each competitor must confirm the correct song and version no later than October 31, 2026. If confirmation is not received by 11:59 p.m. on October 31, 2026, the event will use the music version identified on the submitted dance script.
Beginner / Improver, Intermediate, and Advanced entries will be performed for four (4) walls or until the choreography reaches the first tag or restart, whichever requires the longer performance.
Phrased entries will be performed for a minimum of four (4) walls. Additional walls may be included when needed to provide the judges with a clear and accurate representation of the complete choreography.
Judging is based on the choreography rather than the performance ability of the dancers.
Choreographers may invite supporting dancers to perform with them. There is no set limit on the number of supporting dancers unless space, safety, venue capacity, or the Event Director requires a restriction.
Collaborations and co-choreographed entries are welcome.
COMPETITOR RESPONSIBILITIES
Each competitor, or a representative chosen by the competitor, must attend the competitors’ meeting.
Competitors are responsible for reading and understanding all published competition rules before taking the floor.
All instructions concerning check-in, staging, music verification, performance order, and competition flow must be followed.
Failure to follow the published rules or event procedures may result in disqualification.
Questions concerning competition procedures, scoring administration, rule interpretation, or the execution of the competition must be directed to the Event Director.
BEGINNER / IMPROVER DIVISION GUIDANCE
The Beginner / Improver division is designed for choreography that is approachable for newer dancers and reflects the ability, coordination, and learning expectations generally associated with these levels.
If the choreography includes more than eight (8) counts of Intermediate- or Advanced-level steps, the dance will not be eligible for the Beginner / Improver division.
Certain movements, timing structures, and turning patterns are more frequently found in higher-level choreography. Using one of these elements does not automatically disqualify an entry or require it to be moved to another division. Choreographers should, however, consider how the element affects the dance’s overall difficulty, complexity, accessibility, and ease of instruction.
Division placement will be evaluated by considering the choreography in its entirety. Neither the Event Director nor the judging panel will determine a dance’s level solely because it contains one particular movement.
